This book addresses how thinking about knowledge in Portugal has been appropriated socially and politically. The analysis is developed on the basis of many of the reflections tested, developed and implemented over the last few decades, and includes a prospective analysis for 2030.
This book includes essays and reflections that have resulted from the annual Prospective Meetings of Arrábida, between 1992 and 2022 (in Portuguese).
The Prospective Meetings consist of working meetings with the involvement of the most relevant national and international actors and specialists, and their continuity constitutes today a heritage of dialogue and mutual knowledge, rare in Portuguese society.
All the Prospective Meetings have been held at the Convento da Arrábida, sponsored by the Fundação Oriente (and also by the National Commission for Portuguese Discoveries, in the early years).
The Institute for Prospective Studies (IP - "Instituto de Prospetiva") was established in 1991 as a non-profit private association, with the mission of promoting free thinking and debate around fundamental issues for the future of Portuguese society and Europe. The creation and development of the Institute was a process led by José Mariano Gago (1948-2015) within the scope of his unique civic, scientific and political action and driven by a group of relevant personalities from various social, political and cultural backgrounds.
The Institute has been responsible, since 1992, for the annual, never-interrupted organization of a Prospective Meeting that promotes reflection and dialogue around structuring themes for Portuguese society.
